Diane
Lavoie
Born in Quebec, Diane has been living in Winnipeg for 40 years. She started painting as
a young adult after her first trip to Europe. For many years it was simply a hobby, but, in
her forties, she completed a BFA at the University of Manitoba. She has participated in
several solo and group exhibitions, including at La Maison des artistes visuels
francophones in Saint-Boniface and at several Winnipeg galleries with the Grey Matters
collective. She has also been involved with the Learn through the Arts Program, the
Winnipeg Art Gallery School Programs, and has given art workshops to adults. A retired
translator, Diane is a published author of children’s novels.
Statement
My body of works combines paintings and collages done using a wide variety of
supports, mediums, objects and techniques. It reflects my eclectic nature, my openness
to change and my intense curiosity for the natural world and the various ways in which
humans try to depict it.
In terms of subject matter, I am fond of water, plants and trees, rocks, agricultural
landscapes and architecture; especially old and decaying structures that reflect the
passage of time. The scenes I portray are mostly determined by my life experiences
documented in photographs.
For the most part, I work with watercolor (on natural or synthetic paper) and acrylic (on
wood panels or canvas) but I also like to include other mediums in my creations: ink,
markers, crayons, thread (for embroidery), wire, sea glass, driftwood, rocks, and many
others. For me, everything has potential art and mark making qualities.
My style also varies, ranging from realism to partial abstraction. A big fan of sumi-e, I am
thriving to achieve a fresh and loose way of drawing and painting, something I find hard
to master.
